How to Scan a QR Code from an Image or Screenshot
Why Scan from an Image?
Sometimes you receive a QR code as an image — in a message, email, or screenshot. You might want to scan it without pointing your camera at another screen. Or maybe you saved a QR code earlier and want to read it now.
The good news: you don't need a camera to scan QR codes. You can scan them directly from saved images on your phone or computer.
Method 1: Use an Online QR Scanner
The easiest way to scan a QR code from an image is using a browser-based scanner:
Click "Upload Image" and select the QR code image from your device. You can also drag and drop the file.
The scanner will automatically detect and decode the QR code. You'll see the content (URL, text, or other data) instantly.
Copy the result to clipboard, or if it's a URL, click to open it directly.
Privacy tip: Browser-based scanners process images locally on your device. Your QR code data never leaves your computer.
Method 2: Use Your Phone's Built-in Scanner
Many phones can scan QR codes from images directly:
iPhone (iOS)
- Open the Photos app
- Find the image with the QR code
- Tap and hold on the QR code
- A popup will appear with the QR code content
Android (Google Lens)
- Open the Google Photos app
- Find the image with the QR code
- Tap the Lens icon at the bottom
- Google Lens will scan and show the result
Samsung Gallery
- Open the Gallery app
- Find the image with the QR code
- Tap the Bixby Vision or Lens icon
- The QR code will be scanned automatically
When to Use Each Method
| Situation | Best Method |
|---|---|
| On computer, have image file | Online QR Scanner |
| On phone, image in gallery | Built-in phone scanner |
| Multiple QR codes in one image | Online QR Scanner |
| No app installation wanted | Online QR Scanner |
Troubleshooting
QR Code Not Detected
- Make sure the QR code is clearly visible and not blurry
- Ensure good contrast between the QR code and background
- Try cropping the image to focus on just the QR code
- The QR code might be damaged or incomplete
Image Too Blurry
If the image is blurry, try:
- Using the crop feature to isolate the QR code
- Asking the sender for a clearer image
- Taking a screenshot at higher resolution
Note: Some QR codes are intentionally designed to only work with specific apps (like payment QR codes). These may not decode in general scanners.
What Can QR Codes Contain?
QR codes can store different types of data:
- Website URLs — Links to websites, landing pages, or app stores
- Text — Plain text messages or information
- Contact info — vCard contact details
- WiFi credentials — Network name and password
- Email addresses — Compose email links
- Phone numbers — Click-to-call links
- Calendar events — Event details to add to calendar
